Ashley Brown has been promoted from assistant to head coach for girls basketball. She replaces Michael Huffman who resigned to become boys coach at West Lowndes.
Brown is a 2006 McAdams graduate who played basketball at Holmes Community College and Mississippi Valley State where she received a physical education degree in 2010. She was an assistant for girls and boys teams the past year.
“For her to have been here for a year brings a measure of familiarity. That's going to be a plus,” Ross said. “The kids can relate to her.”
Brown received a master's degree in sports science from Jackson State and masters degrees in business administration and leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She was as assistant women’s basketball coach at Arkansas Pine Bluff for seven years before returning to McAdams.
“I want to uplift the program,” she said. “We have a team that can go far and maybe win a state championship. But we have to push ourselves.”
She wants her players to reflect her image on the court. “I like to play hard. I like to play with a lot of sportsmanship. I'm not one to show a lot of emotion. You play with emotion, but you don't let it show.”
McAdams went 13-12 for the 2019-20 season, including 8-2 for second place in Region 5-1A, but was edged 53-52 by Sebastopol in the opening round of the 1A playoffs.
