Kosciusko senior Jacob Gibson has signed to play golf at Meridian Community College.
“I've always wanted to go there,” he said. “I've liked them for awhile.”
He said he might study electrical engineering, with a goal of moving on to the Division 1 level.
As a junior, Gibson just missed qualifying for the 4A state match, losing a sudden death playoff. He is disappointed that he did not get an opportunity this year. Kosciusko did not play any matches prior to the closing of schools ending spring sports in Mississippi.
“I felt like this would be my year. You play for five years and your senior year kind of ends out of nowhere,” he said. “But once I started talking with coach (Ronnie) Key at Meridian, I kind of held my head up high. It gave me something to look forward to next year.”
Redbud Springs Country Club, a nine-hole course in Kosciusko, is his home course and home course for the high school team. In practice this year, he averaged 34.4 on the 2,827-yard, par 36 course.
Because Gibson works at Redbud Springs in course management, he has been able to continue playing.
His father started him in the sport when he was only two.
Kosciusko coach Logan Cheek was effusive in his praise for Gibson. “As an athlete, he's phenomenal. He has a great mentality for the game. He has everything you wish you could get in any athlete you ever coached. It's remarkable to see how quick he can adjust.”
