Ethel and McAdams each had one gold medalist at the 1A state track meet last Saturday at Pearl High School. French Camp did not have any individual winners, but the boys and girls teams both finished eighth.
For Ethel, Zakiya Dotson won the girls 200 in 26.36. She was also second in the 400 (59.80).
McAdams junior Percy Lewis won the boys shot put with a throw of 47-10.
The Ethel girls finished 10th with 29 points. In addition to Dotson, Dejah Merritt was sixth in the 300 hurdles (53.89) and Takia Miller eighth in the 400 (1:17.48). The 800 relay team with Miller, Akilah Erving, Dejah Merritt and Dotson, finished third. The 400 team with Stavianna Cain, Chiquita Merritt, Erving and Dejah Merritt was eighth.
Ethel had two participants in the boys meet. Izik Stewart was sixth in the 110 hurdles (20.75) and Jace Dean seventh in the discus (102-0).
Lewis led the McAdams boys to 11th place with 22 points. Kristopher Brown was third in the 100 (11.24), Querrion Gadson fifth in the high jump (5-10) and Kendrioun Boatman seventh in the shot put (40-6¾).
McAdams had one participant in the girls meet, Jakeria Young, who was fourth in the high jump at 4-6.
Distance runners Colby Walters and Ami Sherrif led French Camp, which finished with 30 points in the boys meet and 35 in the girls meet.
French Camp coach Joe Watkins was pleased with the performance of this teams. “Almost every athlete did a personal best,” he said.
Walters was second in the boys 800 in 2:03.94 and second in the 1600 (4:44.26). Sherrif was third in the girls 1600 (5:46.30) and fourth in the 800 (2:36.86).
Other boys who participated were Adlai Urbina, third in the 400 (53.93); James Fowler, fifth in the discus (106-9) and the 1600 relay team with Urbina, Jake Seawright, Phillip Carradine and Walters running anchor finished fifth.
For the girls, Averie Jane Gundy was sixth in the 800 (2:51.25) and sixth in the 1600 (6:12.24), Maddi Davis fifth in the 300 hurdles (53.07) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (19.52) and Jasmine Bonty fourth in the shot put (312-3¼) and seventh in the discus (81-7). The 1600 relay team with Emma Wright, Gundy, Davis and Sherrif finished fifth,
Tupelo Christian was the 1A girls and boys winner.
