There is a 2020-21 sports calendar on the Mississippi High School Activities Association website, but it is tentative because of uncertainty caused by the pandemic.
“Everything is pretty fluid at this time,” said MHSAA executive director Don Hinton.
The Mid South Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) also has a sports calendar on its website that is “as official as possible,” but also subject to change, according to Chris Chance, MAIS associate director for activities.
These are the fall sports for MHSAA high schools in Attala County:
Kosciusko – football, volleyball, and cross country; Ethel – football, volleyball, and cross country; and McAdams – football and volleyball. French Camp, also an MHSAA school, has football and cross country in the fall.
For football, practice can begin Aug. 3. A scrimmage may be held Aug. 14. Dates for classic games are Aug. 20 and 21 for Kosciusko as a 4A school and Aug 20, 21 or 28 for McAdams and Ethel as 1A schools. Classic games are not jamborees and are part of the schedule that counts towards wins and losses.
For Kosciusko, the opening round of the 4A playoffs Nov. 6. For McAdams, Ethel and French Camp, the 1A playoffs begin Nov. 13. Championship games for all classes are scheduled for Dec. 4 and 5 at Davis Wade Stadium on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville.
The tentative volleyball schedule for all classes calls for practice to begin July 27, scrimmage Aug. 3, classic match Aug. 7 or 8, first match Aug. 11 and the playoffs to begin Oct. 15. Championships matches are scheduled for Oct. 22-24 at Mississippi State.
Cross country, like volleyball, has the same tentative schedule for all classes. Practice may begin July 27, the first meet no earlier than Aug. 17 and the state meet Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 at Choctaw Trails in Jackson.
Winona Christian and Central Holmes Christian School are MAIS schools. Both have football, softball and cross country in the fall.
The schedule for football has July 27 as the first day for practice. Jamboree games may be played Aug. 13, 14 or 15, followed by the first regular game Aug. 21. As AAA schools, the first date for playoffs would be Nov. 6. Championship games will be Nov. 19, 20 and 21 and the all-star game Dec. 4.
The first possible playing date for softball is July 31. Regional tournaments are scheduled for Sept. 26 and 28, class tournaments Oct. 3 and 5 and class championship series Oct. 10. Winona Christian and Central Holmes both compete in 3A District 2.
The MAIS cross country meet will be Oct. 21 at Choctaw Trails.
MAIS also has volleyball and girls soccer in the fall, but neither Winona Christian nor Central Homes has a team in either sport.
