It’s not often that college football coaches go looking for French Camp Academy.
But that was certainly the case in the early part of 2021 when senior C.J. Johnson became a hot commodity in recruiting circles.
Johnson had committed to play at the Naval Academy in the summer but that didn’t stop the college coaches from calling. And because of his super-high ACT score, many of the nation’s top academic schools came calling as well.
While many thought Johnson might stay close to home at Mississippi State, Johnson chose to take his talents to Northwestern University.
“It got really wild those last couple of weeks,” French Camp Coach Nathan Wright said. “We had coaches calling every day. Everybody was coming in on him late. You just don’t see guys with his kind of size and speed and athletic ability. He is a once-in-a-career kind of player. He works really hard on the field and in the classroom and deserves whatever he gets.”
