Winona Christian athletic director Junior Graham said it hasn’t been a huge year for the Stars in any sport in 2021.
But perhaps the biggest shakeup on campus is in the baseball program. Long-time coach Shannon Self stepped down as baseball coach and remained on staff as a football coach and teacher.
The Stars hired former Kosciusko baseball coach Derrick Boland to be the new baseball coach.
“He has been wide open since he got hired,” Graham said of Boland. “He has made a lot of aesthetic changes to the facility since he got hired and has worked really hard down there. That has been a boost in the arm to the program there. He may run into the same troubles with football with his numbers. We just don’t have a lot of boy athletes in the school right now.”
So far in the 2021-22 school year, it’s been one of ups and downs.
The Stars had a rough football season, playing the season with just 18 players and coming away with just two wins, beating Delta Streets twice. The Stars lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs, falling to eventual 3A state champion Greenville Christian.
On the softball field, the Lady Stars won the district championship with an undefeated record. The Lady Stars finished second in the Class 3A North State Tournament and lost two straight games in the Class 3A state tournament.
“Our girls have had a solid year,” Graham said. “They played well in basketball last year and have been good this season as well. They were good in softball but have been pretty good since I got here.”
