A short-handed McAdams football team was defeated by West Lowndes 27-0 in a scrimmage.
The Bulldogs were missing several players due to virtual learning. Coach Kenneth Nelson is hoping to get some of the players back if they choose to return to classes.
“We didn't play well at all,” Nelson said. “We looked like a team playing its first game in awhile. I can't say it was unexpected. I did see some growing pains, but I think we are going to be all right.”
McAdams opens the season Friday at Union, a strong 2A school that defeated two-time defending 1A state champion Nanih Waiya 21-0 in a scrimmage. “They're not as big as us, but they are pretty gritty,” Nelson said. “They do a good job coming off the ball and going to the ball. They're a well put together two-way football team. We are going to have our hands full.”
Union lost to 2A state champion Taylorsville in the playoffs last year. The Yellowjackets return their top two runners, Jaylon Buckley and Kenyon Clay.
Union's big-play threat is Jamarcus Jones, a 6-5 wide receiver and linebacker who had 20 receptions for 474 yards and five touchdowns a year ago.
