In its first season with a volleyball team, McAdams is destined to win a region championship.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association placed McAdams in Region 6-1A with Ray Brooks and West Tallahatchie. But Ray Brooks closed and West Tallahatchie will not be participating in fall sports this year due to the pandemic, resulting in a one-team region.
There are no players on the McAdams team with previous experience in organized volleyball, but that does not mean the team lacks athletes. Nine of the 15 players also play basketball.
“We have basketball players and power lifters. Others are girls who just want to play sports,” said coach Ashley Brown. “We've mastered the basics. If we can master the serve, I think we will be all right.”
Brown did not want to single out any players. “But as a team, I feel that even though this is new to them, they are accepting every challenge of learning the game with an open mind set. I believe with their willingness to learn, the team will do great.”
McAdams will begin its season Aug. 27 with a home match against Holmes County Central, which finished 11-11 a year ago in its first season. The 1A playoffs are scheduled to begin Oct. 13 and McAdams is guaranteed a spot.
