The Kosciusko Whippets got busy with summer football workouts this past week.
The Whippets lifted weights three days last week and had 7-on-7 contests with McAdams on Wednesday and “We had a really good first week,” Kosciusko coach Kelly Causey said. “This might have been the first week where I’ve had 95 percent of the kids for the entire week. That’s great for a first week, which is always the toughest. I’m proud of what have had out so far. It’s been really good
attendance.”
Then on Saturday, the Whippets traveled to Oxford for the Ole Miss 7-on-7 camp and went 2-2 on the day.
“We beat Oxford and beat Provine,” Causey said. “We lost to Senatobia and North Panola. Beating Oxford was a pretty big deal. Their quarterback is committed to Arkansas and he’s a heck of a player. I thought we did well beating Oxford. They are one of the bigger 7-on-7 teams in the state so that was a big deal. I thought we did well.”
While the Whippets will still run the option-based offense, Causey said the 7-on-7 is good for both sides of the football.
“It’s good for us to throw the ball around,” Causey said. “Most people are throwing the ball these days. We are not in the gun that much, but it’s good to work on. For us, it’s really more for the defense. We play the coverages that we would play in the regular season.
Some folks will run defenses they won’t use in the regular season, but what’s the good in that. We just run our stuff and try to get better on defense.”
Causey said Antonio Harmon, who has been offered by Mississippi State, didn’t get to play the entire day after suffering a deep-thigh bruise.
“I thought everyone did their part,” Causey said. “It was a good team effort. Antonio was really shining until he got hurt. I thought Zavier Miller had a good day and Azikwe Mays did a good job of throwing the football.”
Causey said the Whippets will play at Grenada in 7-on-7 on Thursday and continue weight room workouts.
FUNDRAISER
The Kosciusko football team is also selling boxes of chicken strips as a fund-raiser. Causey said the boxes will be delivered on June 13 and are available for $22 apiece from any Kosciusko football player.
“They are very good quality,” Causey said. “It has done real well in the past.”
