The Ethel Tiger baseball team moved to 8-4 on the year after going 2-2 during the break and dropping a close decision to Winona Christian on Monday night on the road.
In the first contest of the break at QV Sykes Park in Meridian on Tuesday, the Tigers lost a one-run contest to Nanih Waiya by a score of 9-8. Hayden Burns got the start and loss for the Tigers. Burns pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, eight runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out one. Tyson Steen pitched the final 3.2 innings and yielded one unearned run on just three hits and no walks while striking out two batters.
The offensive leaders for the Tigers were Steen with a single, double and two RBI; Burns with a single, double and an RBI; Hayes Wood with two singles, three runs scored and an RBI; Alex Schuster with two singles, three runs scored and two RBI; Tanner Reeves with a single and one run scored and Brady Odom with two singles and one run scored.
The Tigers returned to Meridian on Thursday and lost once again, this time to Quitman by a score of 7-2. Schuster got the start and loss for the Tigers by pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, six runs (two earned), while walking four and striking out one. Blake Wilkinson pitched the final 2.2 innings and yielded just one run on one hit.
The offensive leaders for the Tigers were Steen with two singles, one run scored and two RBI; Burns with an RBI; Wood with a single and one run scored; Odom with a single; Cody Weeks with a single; Cam Campbell with a single and Schuster with a sacrifice.
The Tigers got back on track Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Forest. Wood got the start and win for the Tigers and yielded one unearned run in seven complete on just four hits while striking out five, walking none. The offensive leaders for the Tigers were Steen with a double and one run scored; Burns with a single and one run scored; Schuster with a single and one run scored; Odom with a single; Weeks with a single and Campbell with a single.
On Friday the Tigers took care of business early and defeated Newton Academy by a score of 8-3. Steen got the start and win, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out 11 and walking one in six innings of work. Burns pitched the final inning of the contest and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit. The offensive leaders for the Tigers were Steen with a single, double, two runs scored and an RBI; Burns with two singles and two RBI; Wood with a single and one run scored; Schuster with three singles, three runs scored and two RBI; Weeks with a single and an RBI and Campbell with a single.
The Tigers hit the road this past Monday to take on Winona Christian and lost the contest 5-4. Burns got the start and pitched six innings, yielding four runs (three earned on three home runs) on five hits and four walks while striking out six. Steen took the loss in one inning of work by allowing a run (unearned) on no hits and no walks while striking out one hitter. The offensive leaders for the Tigers were Wood with a single, home run, two runs scored and an RBI; Steen with a double and two RBI; Schuster with a single and an RBI; Odom with a single and Campbell with a single.
The Tigers hosted Winona Christian on Tuesday and will travel to Bogue Chitto on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. contest before hosting French Camp on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Region 6-1A action.
