Michael Huffman is unbeaten as McAdams baseball coach. Unfortunately, that' i because the Bulldogs have not played any games since Huffman became the first-year coach.
Three game were rained out. Then schools closed and the season ended.
The season that wasn't is especially tough on a young team. Coming off a winless 2019, 2020 figured to be a growing experience.
“Any time a kid doesn't play a sport it sets him back,” Huffman said. “Any time you don't harness your skills it sets you back.”
Twenty-five players came out for the team and only two are seniors. “Last year they had 17, so the program is growing. That's really a big plus for us. McAdams baseball is growing,” Huffman said. “I could see the enthusiasm every day. I would have loved to see how that would relate to actual ball games.”
Not playing this year is a setback, he said. “But the main thing is that the enthusiasm we have carries through to the next year. The younger players are a little disappointed about not playing. But at the same time, they realize the seriousness of the situation.”
When and if things return to a normal state, Huffman hopes his team can hit the diamond. “We're going to play extracurricular games in the summer. Pick up games with other high schools. We're just waiting until we get back to normal.”
He has been in contact with other coaches. But all depends upon that return to normalcy. “We're just in standby right now.”
