It took four quarters and two overtimes, but McAdams finally scored against Shaw. That was enough for a 6-0 victory, thanks to an outstanding performance by the Bulldog defense.
“The defense played really well,” said coach Kenneth Nelson. “Every time they (Shaw) had an opportunity to score, we made plays. All night long, we made plays.”
Two of those plays came in overtime. Shaw had a chance to win the game after McAdams came up empty on the first overtime possession. But a sack by LiKarius Ward and a holding penalty set Shaw back, resulting in a missed field goal attempt.
Shaw's second overtime possessions was thwarted by an end zone interception by Deon Wilkins, one of four takeaways by the Bulldog defense.
McAdams stopped itself on its first overtime possession with penalties. The second time, Johnatvis Rimmer dropped back to pass from the 10. “He didn't see anyone open, so he tucked the ball and ran it in,” Nelson said.
McAdams moved inside the Shaw 10 in the second quarter and again in the fourth quarter, but could not finish the drive either time.
Shaw came close to winning the game in the final seconds when Montrelli Finley hooked up with Jamarion Walker on a 54-yard pass that nearly went all the way. “Our guys were able to rally around and make the tackle,” Nelson said.
Ward at linebacker and Wilkins in the secondary had exceptional games according to Nelson. “Ward played light out on defense.”
McAdams held Shaw to 129 yards, only 31 on the ground. McAdams and Shaw are both 3-4. But more importantly, McAdams is 2-1 in Region 3-1A and Shaw is 1-2.
