Jakyra Young of Kosciusko High School has been named number 16 on a list of the 55 best senior girls basketball players in the state compiled by the Mississippi High School Activities Association.
Young, a 5-8 guard, is a transfer from McAdams who is immediately eligible to play for Kosciusko, according to Lady Whippets coach Cory Guyton. Young played for Kosciusko during the summer program.
She averaged 24.7 points and 10.7 rebounds for McAdams last season, was named Region 5-1A Offensive Player of the Year and played in the North/South All Star Game.
“She’s one of the better scorers in the state,” Guyton said. “She brings leadership. She brings athletic ability to play on both ends of the court. She can help groom some of the younger girls.”
Young has not made a decision about college, although some college coaches have shown interest, Guyton said. “Right now we just want to focus on getting ready for the season.”
She joins a team that went 12-17 for the 2018-19 season in Guyton’s first year as coach.
