French Camp was the boys’ winner and Ethel the girls’ winner at the 5-1A track meet, but it took a recount for Ethel to claim its championship.
French Camp was declared the girls winner at the conclusion of the meet at Winona, but a review showed that Ethel was the winner by one point,
“They gave us the trophy and declared us the winner. Then I got a call a couple of hours later from the meet director (Winona coach Chris McRae) that there was a mistake,” French Camp coach Joe Watkins said.
Ethel won two boys’ events and eight girls events, McAdams seven boys’ events and two girls’ events and French Camp seven boys’ events and six girls’ events.
Sophomore Zakiya Dotson was a double winner for the Ethel girls and junior Izik Stewart won two events for the Ethel boys. Dotson won the 200 in 26:16 and the 400 (1:05.05). Stewart swept the hurdles, winning the 110 in 19:22 and the 300 in 48.71.
Other girls winners from Ethel were senior Chiquita Merritt in the 100 (14.49), sophomore Dejah Merritt in the 300 hurdles (53.66), freshman Jasmine Johnson in the shot put (29-7) and the 400, 800 and 1600 relay teams.
The only other boys winner was D’Ayres Merritt in the triple jump (28-7).
For McAdams, senior Querrion Gadson won the boys high jump at 5-8 and long jump at 18-10. Other boys winners were junior Kristopher Brown in the 100 (12.84), eighth grader Chaki Haywood in the 200 (23.30), junior Percy Lewis in the shot put (46-3) and the 400 and 800 relay teams.
Girls winners were junior Jakeria Young in the high jump (4-4) and junior Aaliyah Lusk in the long jump (12-7).
Junior Colby Walters led the French Camp boys team with victories in the 800 with a time of 2:16 and 1600 (5:12). He also finished second to teammate Adlai Urbina in the 400 with a clocking of 55.12 and anchored the winning 1600 relay team.
Urbina, a junior won the 400 in 54.79, was second behind Waters in the 800 (2:20) and ran on winning 1600 relay teams. “
Other boys winners were freshman Josh Deal in the 3200 (14:20), senior James Fowler in the discus (104-8¾) and the 3200 relay team.
Senior Ami Sherrif was a double winner for French Camp in the girls meet with victories in the 800 (2:56) and 1600 (6:18). Other winners were sophomore Tessa Mullins in the 3200 (17:29), freshman Maddi Davis in the 100 hurdles (19.62), freshman Jasmine Bonty in the discus (73-1½) and the 3200 relay team.
The top four in each event advance to the Region 3-1A meet Friday at Winona High School.
Boys who qualified for Ethel: Merritt with a third in the long jump, sophomore Jace Dean, second in the discus and third in the shot put; sophomore Scott Walters, third in the 200; sophomore Hunter Cauthern, third in the discus; seventh grader Kentrell Dotson, fourth in the 100 and fourth in the 200; and freshman Ethan Watson, fourth in the 1600.
Ethel girls received second place finishes from junior Stavianna Cain in the 100 and the long jump, senior Akilah Erving in the 200 and junior Takia Miller in the 400. Eighth grader Jaterika Merritt was third in the 200 and senior Americle Edwards took third in the shot put.
For McAdams boys, senior Kendrioun Boatman was second in the shot put, junior Henry Boatman second in the 110 hurdles, sophomore Me’Kyle Riley third in the 100 and third in the 400 and junior Deon Wilkins fourth in the long jump.
In girls’ competition, junior Haley Perteet was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put, seventh grader Katerina Weatherby third in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the long jump, seventh grader Takyalah Rimmer third in the long jump and seventh grader Akeelah Young fourth in the 800 and fourth in the 300 hurdles. The 400 and 800 relay teams finished second.
Boys’ qualifiers for French Camp: Carradine, second in the 100, second in the 200 and second in the long jump; Deal, second in the 1600 and third in the 300 hurdles ; Seawright, second in the 300 hurdles (55.12) and third in the 110 hurdles (20.67); McKinney, second in the 3200 (14:58) and third in the 1600 (5:58); Owens, third in the 3200 (16:39); Fowler, fourth in the shot put (33-2); and junior Julian Kay, fourth in the discus (80-3½).
Other girls who qualified: Gundy, second in the 1600, Davis, second in the 300 hurdles; Bonty, second in the shot put; freshman Neviah Gathright, third in the 100, third in the 400 and fourth in the 200; Mullins, third in the 1600; freshman Emma Wright, fourth in the 400, and the 1600 relay team with a second place.
