As January gets going, the Central Holmes girls basketball team seems to be hitting its stride.
The Lady Trojans won four games over the Christmas break, beating Newton County Academy and Calhoun Academy in the Benton Tournament and then won a pair of road games with a 54-48 win over Manchester and a 62-44 win over Oak Hill.
Central Holmes will continue action this week as they are set to travel to Columbus Christian in a non-district game on Thursday. Then on Friday, Central Holmes will host Marshall Academy in a key district contest. Next week, Central Holmes will travel to Carroll in another key district game on Tuesday, Jan. 15. On Thursday, Jan. 17, Central Holmes will host Washington School before a home contest with Oak Hill on Friday, Jan. 18.
The Lady Trojans were able to pick up two more wins last week, including a big district win against Oak Hill.
The Lady Trojans returned from the Christmas break and beat Manchester 54-48 then beat Oak Hill 62-44.
Against Manchester, the Lady Trojans fell behind early before rallying for the win, avenging a 48-31 loss to the Lady Mavericks in early November. Manchester led 17-6 at the end of the first period and 27-22 at the half. But Central Holmes outscored Manchester 13-7 in the third to take a 35-34 lead heading into the fourth. The Lady Trojans put the game away in the fourth by outscoring Manchester 19-14 to take the win. Breann Bell led the Lady Trojans with 21 points. In the junior high contest, Manchester won 43-26 as Mackenzie Ward and Taylor Spell each had eight points apiece.
Against Oak Hill, the Lady Trojans jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first period and cruised to an 18-point win. McKaylee Polk led Central Holmes with 24 points while Breann Bell added 14 points. In the junior varsity game, Central Holmes won 39-35 as Taylor Spell had 13 points.
BOYS
The Trojans also had a good two weeks as they won three of four contests.
After a win over Newton County Academy, the Trojans beat Calhoun Academy 59-35 at the Benton Tournament. Last week, the Trojans lost 64-52 to Manchester but rebounded with a big 59-57 win over Oak Hill on Friday.
Against Calhoun, Lake Melton had 17 points while Noah Burton added 12 points. In the loss to Manchester, Lake Melton had another big game with 24 points while Wykece Johnson had 10 points. Against Oak Hill, Noah Burton led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points while Lake Melton had 15 points.
