Much like football, opposing Division 5-1A coaches think a lot of Ethan Wright.
The French Camp senior was recently voted as the Division 5-1A Most Valuable Player by the team’s coaches.
Also in the division, Sebastopol’s Makarious Michaels was named the Offensive Player of the Year while Noxapater’s Luke Reynolds was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Ethel’s K.T. Adams was named the 5-1A Pitcher of the Year.
At the plate Wright hit .328 with a team-high 26 RBIs and four home runs to lead the Panthers. On the mound, Wright was 5-4 with a 1.76 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched. Wright had 79 strikeouts and 29 walks.
“Ethan had another solid year,” coach Nathan Wright said. “His batting statistics were not what they have been in the past, however, he was extremely solid defensively. Whether he was on the mound, behind the plate or on third base, he had great defensive numbers. I love the boy. All year long, he was a humble athlete that neither underestimated nor overestimated his abilities. He’s a great person that some college program is really missing out on.”
The Panthers finished the season with an 18-10 record and started the season out with nine straight wins.
Also making the team all-region team from French Camp is Avery Summers. Summers had a whopping .417 batting average with a team-high 32 walks and an .632 on-base percentage.
Wright was also named the Division 3-1A Most Valuable Player in football and was Class 1A All-State linebacker as well. Wright had another monster season for the Panthers with more than 2,200 yards of total offense. Wright was 82-of-131 passing for 1,254 yards with 18 touchdowns and just one interception. Wright was second on the team in rushing with 1,035 yards on 171 carries with 16 touchdowns. Wright also led the Panthers on defense with an incredible 148 tackles with 108 of those being solo tackles, which ended up being eighth in the state of Mississippi.
