With high school football nearing postseason play and the volleyball season having come to a close, basketball and soccer are about to take center stage in Star-Herald sports coverage area.The Lady Trojans of Central Holmes are taking part in a tournament at Indianola this week, while both Central Holmes and Winona Christian are set to compete in the Benton Academy Girls Preseason Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.Traditionally girls teams get started a little earlier than the boys, due to many male athletes playing both basketball and football. Some schools use the transition time between football and basketball to give some athletes a chance to get playing time in order to build team depth before the multi-sport players transition to the court.Other girls games set for next Tuesday have Ethel playing host to Choctaw County at 7 p.m., while McAdams takes on Union at Scott Central. The Kosciusko boys and girls are set to take part in the Grenada Shootout on Saturday, Nov. 7 by taking on J.Z. George.Soccer officially opens the following week with the Kosy boys and girls traveling to Columbus on Thursday, Nov. 12 and hosting Caledonia the following day.On the hoops scene, The PMG (Premier Medical Group) Shootout will be hosted by Kosciusko High School on Nov. 14. Eight games are on tap beginning with the Newton High School and Madison St. Joe girls contest at 10 a.m.The McAdams girls are to to face Grenada at 3:20 p.m., followed by a match-up between the boys teams.
