The French Camp boys basketball team lost its first two games of the season last week and the girls team lost once, evening their record at 1-1.
The Panthers were defeated by East Webster 52-42 and by Winona 57-55. The Lady Panthers lost to East Webster 62-37. The girls game with Winona was canceled because Winona's team was quarantined.
The Panthers had only one practice before taking the court against East Webster. “We had a terrible first quarter,” said coach Robert Leathers. “We couldn't make a basket.”
French Camp was unable hold a fourth quarter lead against Winona. “That was a ball game we should have won. We just didn't get it done at the free throw line,” Leathers said. “The thing that killed us was Darrion (Smith) missed free throws.” Smith missed all six free throws in the two games.
C.J. Johnson scored 23 points in each game. “He looked really comfortable,” Leathers said.
The Lady Panthers of FCA pulled within two of East Webster in the third quarter before East Webster pulled away behind three-point shooting. “We had spurts where we looked pretty good, but that is what they were, just brief spurts,” said coach Polly LeVert.
Jasmine Bonty scored 18 points for French Camp, Grace Ann Wade had 10 and Carter Jordan seven.
The next scheduled game for the Panthers and Lady Panthers is Dec. 1 at home against Grace Christian.
Games with Eupora were postponed because Eupora was unable to play. An attempt will be made to reschedule.
“If things don't change, we are going to end up losing a bunch of games,” Leathers said.
