Winona Christian hosted its second annual Football and Fellowship Coaches Clinic this past Friday.
WCS Football Coach Junior Graham organized the event and said he had about 50 coaches show up for the all-day event.
“I thought it was a good day,” Graham said. “We had about 50 show up. A couple of big 7-on-7 tournaments put the hurt on us. The big one in the metro area hurt us for sure. I thought the speakers did a great job and the food was outstanding.”
Graham said he was glad to see a good blend of private and public school coaches.
“It’s always good to bring those coaches together,” Graham said. “A lot of time you get labeled as a public school coach or a private school coach. We may all be in different associations, but we are all football coaches and play the same game and have a lot of the same kind of issues. It’s good to get all of these guys together. I hope somebody met somebody that they didn’t know.”
Two of the highlights of the day were legendary Mississippi coaches Bobby Hall and former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond.
“All Coach Hall did was tell stories, but he tied them into his journey through the game of football and that was another interesting hour,” Graham said. “John Bond is another entertaining guy, as well. He is a very humble guy to be as popular as he is in this state.”
Graham said he was also impressed with Lafayette County Assistant Coach Matt McCrory.
“I thought Coach McCrory out of Lafayette knocked the ball out of the park with his presentation,” Graham said. “He was one of the young guys and his youthful presentation was refreshing. He was passionate about what he was doing. I really didn’t know what to expect but he was very knowledgeable. I might have to add more young assistant coaches next year to add that energy to the platform.”
