Kosciusko boys basketball had a loss to Neshoba Central 55-50 last week, but bounced back with a 53-34 victory over Grenada at the Premier Medical Group Shootout hosted by the Whippets.
The Neshoba game was back and forth.
“We kind of ran out of gas,” Coach Eleazarus Greenleaf said. “We missed a lot of shots at the rim.”
Keonte Williams led the Whippets with 12 points. Jerremy Whitcomb had nine points and Vinterrious Hunt seven.
“Against Grenada, we came out ready to play,” said the coach. Davion Roby had 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Jerrell Erving scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Whitcomb scored nine points.
“We rebounded well. That's one thing that hurt us against Neshoba. We didn't do a good job rebounding and communicating on defense. We did a better job against Grenada,” Greenleaf said. “We got out on transition. We ran our offense and created some easy shots. That's what we have to do to win. We have to create easy shots and win as a collective team.”
Girls
The Lady Whippets lost to Neshoba Central 74-31 and were edged by Grenada 69-66 in overtime.
Neshoba Central is a powerful 5A team that reached the North State final last season.
“It's a measuring stick when you play Neshoba Central,” said Coach Cory Guyton. “You have to control all the fundamentals on your end. We kind of fell short in that area. We can learn from it and try to improve.”
D'Nayla Williams had 12 points and Aaliyah Amey 10 for Kosciusko. The Lady Whippets played without two injured starters, Hannah Olive and Janiah Fleming.
Missed free throws down the stretch cost Kosciusko the Grenada game, but Guyton said, “Overall, I thought we played pretty well.”
Grenada is a 6A team.
Williams had 13 points and Olive returned to the lineup with 11.
The Whippets and Lady Whippets played Greenwood Tuesday and have road games with Wingfield Thursday in Jackson.
