A strong performance pitching, hitting, and fielding by Kosciusko resulted in a 9-0 victory over Ridgeland. Three pitchers combined for a the four-hit shutout, the Whippets had 10 hits and played effortless baseball.
“It was a good game,” said coach Cole McBride.
Parker Ryals went the first four innings, allowing three hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. Jacob Nunn allowed a hit and a walk, with one strikeout in two innings and Will Carter finished up with a one-two-three seventh inning, a strikeout and two ground outs.
Hayden Rogers had three hits and an RBI, leadoff batter Kaylan Powell singled, doubled, walked, and scored three times and Connor Wallace had a single and double with two RBIs.
The Whippets had two run rallies in the first and sixth and a five-run third that featured a leadoff double by Powell, a run scoring single by Rogers, two walks and two hit batters.
Games scheduled last week with Choctaw County and McLaurin were postponed by rain. An attempt will be made to reschedule both games.
Kosciusko began Region 4-4A Tuesday against Choctaw Central and plays at Choctaw Central Friday. The schedule has the Whippets playing all five region opponents back-to-back. Leake Central will be March 8 and 11, Louisville March 22 and 25, Northeast Lauderdale, March 29 and April 1 and West Lauderdale April 5 and 8.
McBride said the team is “where we need to be” heading into region play. “We just have to continue to pound the strike zone, play solid defense and look for early opportunities.”
The Whippets will be at Germantown for a non-region game Saturday.
