Kosciusko girls won the 4-4A district meet and the boys were second at Starkville High School.In the girls meet, Kosciusko had 87 points, Northeast Lauderdale 56, Louisville 44, Choctaw Central 44, West Lauderdale 22, and Leake Central 4.For the boys, it was Northeast Lauderdale 92, Kosciusko 76, Choctaw Central 42, Louisville 21, Leake Central 19, and West Lauderdale 5.It was the first meet of the year for Kosciusko. A previous meet at Starkville was canceled due to the weather. Both coaches — Eleazarus Greenleaf for the girls and Derrick Huffman for the boys — felt their teams did well under circumstances that included missed practice time due to weather.It was the fourth consecutive district title for the Lady Whippets. “They practiced really hard leading up to the district so my hat’s off to them,” Greenleaf said. “I’m really pleased and surprised at how well they performed.”Kosciusko girls won five events – Victoria Anderson in the 110 hurdles with a time of 19.75, Tyneria Cross high jump (five feet), Raven Pernell long jump (16-1½), Presley Fulgham pole vault (8-0) and the 800-relay team of Haley Olive, Anasia Teague, Reid Hutchinson and Pernell.Boys won seven events, led by Vinterrious Hunt, a junior, with outstanding times of 10.79 for the 100 and 22.52 for the 200. The 100 time was a personal best and the 200 came the first time Hunt competed at that distance. “I had been wanting him to run it ever since he came to high school, but he wasn’t comfortable,” Huffman said. “A week or two before the meet he came to me and said, ‘Coach, I want to try it.’”Jorge Orduna won the 1600 (5:15.88), Gustavo Orduna the 3200 (11:40.03), Jerrell Erving discus (118-0), and the 400 and 800 relay teams finished first. Hunt anchored both relay teams. He was joined at 400 by Dontavious Fondren, Cody Pope and Kentavious Washington and by Fondren, Pope and Dylvester Selmon for 800.The top four in each event qualified for the Region 2-4A meet Saturday at Center Hill High School in Olive Branch. Other girls who qualified were Cross second in 200, Olive second in 300 hurdles and second in pole vault, Kadie Van second in discus, Makiye Dotso second in high jump, Hutchinson second in triple jump, Aliyah Amey third in triple jump and fourth in long jump, Victoria Anderson third in long jump, Pernell fourth in 100, Markayla McBride fourth in 200, Savannah Fulgham fourth in 400, Emma Rhodes fourth in 3200, Bree Smith fourth in discus and Mariah Woods fourth in shot put. The girls 1600 and 3200 relay teams finished second and the 400 team was third.Boys who qualified were Fondren second in 110 hurdles, Davion Roby second in high jump, third in long jump and third in triple jump, Keonte Williams second in triple jump, Benjamin Vergara third in 3200 and Caden Greer fourth in 110 hurdles. The 3200-relay team finished second and the 1600 team was third.The North State meet will be Apr. 24 at Pontotoc High School.
