Local softball all-stars compete in state tourneys

Three Kosciusko softball teams played in state tournaments recently.

The 11-and-12-year-old team finished second in a tournament at Iuka. The 9-10 team was fourth, also at Iuka and the 7-8 team finished fourth in a tournament at Caledonia.

Whippets make gains during summer hoops

The Kosciusko boys basketball team wound up the summer program with a game at Forest.

“We played a great Quitman team — well coached and very athletic,” said Kosciusko coach Eleazarus Greenleaf. ”It was a real battle. We ended up coming back to win the game.”

Ethel hires McCurry to coach boys basketball

Mitchell McCurry felt the time was right to become a head coach and Ethel athletic director Corey Parish agreed.

McCurry is the new boys basketball and boys track coach at Ethel after two years as a football and basketball assistant at East Webster, his alma mater. “I thought it was time to go after a head coaching job,” he said.

Busy summer helps Lady Whippets prepare for upcoming season

The Kosciusko girls basketball team had a busy summer, a very busy summer. The Lady Whippets went to four camps and played 31 games, the final ones last Thursday.

The camps were at Ole Miss, Mississippi State, East Mississippi Community College and East Central Community College. The record was 18-13.
