Kosciusko senior Will Carter is Mr. Automatic. In three games this year, all Whippet victories, he is 13-for-13 for the extra point following a touchdown.
The latest was 4-4 in Kosciusko's 28-0 victory over Forest.
A special team play got Kosciusko off to a fast start.
“We got a big kickoff return by Lee Wade that set us up on other side of the field,” said Coach Casey Orr. That led to a touchdown run by Ceavon Tolivar.
The Whippets added a TD run by Wade following a punt block by Jerrell Erving and scoring passes from Ethan Wood to Wade and Jeremy Whitcomb.
Wood was 11 of 17 passing for 223 yards. Whitcomb had two receptions for 103 yards, Davion Roby five for 81 and Wade three for 31.
Tolivar led the running attack with seven carries for 56 yards. Wade had two for 27 yards.
“I thought it was our best game for our offensive line,” Orr said.
Reggie Carter led the defense with seven tackles, including two sacks. Carter and Erving, the defensive ends, played well, according to Orr.
But Orr said there is room for improvement on both sides of the ball. The offense played well in the first half, with three of the four TDs, but sputtered at times after intermission. The defense gave up yardage in the first half but was better in the second half.
“We have not put together four good quarters. There seems to be lull in every game when we kind of take our foot off the gas,” said the coach.
Despite the shutout, Kosciusko’s first since 2017, Orr said the defense played better a week earlier in a 28-20 victory over Choctaw County.
The Whippets will begin Region 4-4A play Friday at Choctaw Central. The Warriors are 2-1 with a loss to Union and victories over Nanih Waiya and Lake.
“They have a big, physical quarterback. Everything they do starts and ends with him,” Orr said of Eli Joe. “Defensively, they play with a lot of energy and a lot of effort. That goes a long way in high school football.”
