Winona Christian finally has a new softball coach.
After former coach John Harris left for the East Webster job, the Lady Stars were without a fast-pitch coach.
The Lady Stars hired Katie Ramage to take over for Harris.
Ramage started on Monday with the season set to start in less than a month.
“I’m very excited about this job,” Ramage said. “This has been my dream to coach softball since I was a little girl. It’s hard to put into words how excited I am.”
She may be new to the coaching scene, but she’s no stranger to the game. After playing in high school, she played in college at Davidson-Elkins, a Division II school in Virginia.
After graduating with a degree in exercise science and health and finishing her playing career, Ramage got married and moved to Mississippi.
Ramage said she worked at O’Reilly’s before taking the Winona Christian job.
“I coached one of the rec league teams and one of the players told me that they were looking for a softball coach at Winona Christian, so I put in my application,” Ramage said. “They called me for an interview and the rest is history.”
Ramage inherits an experienced squad at Winona Christian and the first-year coach got a look at them on Monday.
“I got to meet the players on Monday and we had our first practice. They over-exceeded my expectations. We have a lot to look forward to this year,” Ramage said. “They only lost two seniors and have a really young team this year, but a lot of experience.”
Ramage said she plans to hit the ground running to get ready for the season opener.
“For the next month, we are going to practice, practice, practice. I’ll never take less than what they are willing to do. And I’ve seen from day one what they can do,” Ramage said. “They are going to put in some work in the next month and get ready for that first game. We will be at the point where we need to be and win some games. They are definitely capable of that; that’s for sure.”
