Kosciusko boys finished fourth and the girls were ninth at the Region 2-4A track meet at Winona High School.
Senatobia, the defending boys state champion, dominated the boys meet with 229 points and victories in 13 of the 18 events. It was close after that with only 19 points separating second through seventh. Leake Central was runnerup with 55 points, followed by Greenwood 53, Kosciusko 48, Northeast Lauderdale 39, Choctaw Central 37, Clarksdale 36, Gentry 28, West Lauderdale 11 and Louisville 10.
The Whippets did not win any events, but had two seconds, three thirds and two fourth. The top four in each event qualified for the North State meet Thursday at Pontotoc High School.
Kantavious Brown cleared six feet to take second the high jump behind Troy Griffin of Gentry who did 6-2. Kosciusko's other second was the 400 relay team of Kendrick Woodard, Jontavous Roundtree,
Caden Greer and Jaquavous Pace. Their time of 45.02 trailed Northeast Lauderdale with 44.78.
Pace also finished third in the 100 and 200 and anchored the 800 relay team that was fourth. Others on the 800 team were Tyran Mosley, Greer and Demond Reed.
Jayden Ferguson and Grayson Blaylock took third and fourth in the pole vault, each clearing eight feet.
The meet's outstanding performer was Senatobia senior Carlando Crump with victories in the 100 (10.80) and 200 (21.74). Both times were cited by the website the MileSplit website as elite performances.
Girls
Senatobia also won the girls meet, but not quite as decisively as boys. Senatobia won four events and compiled 136½ points. Gentry was second with 76, followed by Leake Central 52½, Louisville 51, Choctaw Central 50, West Lauderdale 44, Clarksdale 42, Northeast Lauderdale 40, Kosciusko 34, Greenwood 16 and Yazoo City 9.
Raven Pernell and Presley Fulgham were the only Kosciusko girls to qualify for North State, but both had outstanding performances.
Pernell won the 200 (27.01) and the long jump (16-1) and finished fifth in the100. Presley won the pole vault clearing nine feet, a foot and a half better than runnerup Nakaeyla Hannond of Senatobia.
Presley is the two-time defending 4A state champion in the pole vault and her performance at the region meet would have been good for second in the boys meet. Her personal best is 9-6, but coach Eleazaerus Greenleaf feels she is capable of between 10 and 11 feet.
He also feels that Pernell can win the long jump and 200 at the state meet. She was third in the long jump last year.
Rain curtailed practice prior to the region meet, but Greenleaf said, “Leading up to the meet this week we will amp it up a bit.”
