Snow and ice left widespread damage across northern Mississippi as a massive storm moved across large parts of the U.S., creating dangerous travel conditions. Trees split open and dropped heavy branches, and power lines crashed down in some areas.
Though the worst damage was in the northern part of the state, areas as far south as Natchez saw icy conditions.

The winter storm that pushed through the state Saturday and Sunday temporarily knocked out power at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman and Delta Correctional Facility in Greenwood, even as temperatures plunged below freezing.
“At Parchman, we had a limb fall on a line,” Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain told Mississippi Today on Sunday afternoon. “The power is coming back on.”

Mrs. Effie Joy Graham, 87, passed away at UMMC January 19, 2026, with her son Mark holding her hand.
Joy was born on January 9, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Pearl Lee and Eunice Sutton Qualls, she was the baby of the family.
Funeral services was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2026, in the Jordan Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation began at 10:00 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Rev. Glen Ellington officiated.
Private burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Springs, Arkansas.

TUPELO, Miss. – The National Park Service will close Natchez Trace Parkway between TN Highway 46 (milepost 429) and the northern terminus (milepost 442) south of Nashville, Tennessee at approximately 8 p.m. Central Standard Time today, Jan. 23. Public-to-public transfers, sometimes called open enrollment or portability, are not robustly used. The policy is not a panacea. It can be a lifeline for hardship, though.
Forty-six (46) states, plus the District of Columbia, allow a student to transfer from the public school they are assigned to into another public school. Mississippi is among them.
