Kosciusko baseball is off to a strong start in Region 4-4A with two wins over Choctaw Central, 7-2 on the road and 13-2 at home.
“They guys played hard. Did some things well,” said coach Cole McBride. “We barreled up some balls, threw well at times and played pretty good defense.”
The Whippets made only one error in the two games.
Ty Ramage and Landon Wallace led the Whippets to the 7-2 victory with their pitching and hitting. They combined on a three hitter with eight strikeouts. Wallace pitched shutout ball over the final four innings, allowing one hit, and had two hits and an RBI. Ramage drove in two runs.
Leadoff batter Bennie Powell scored twice and drove in a run,
Ramage had a single and double with three RBIs in the 13-2 game, Powell doubled and walked, scored three times and drove in a run and Peyton Odom homered, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Freshman Braxton Smith worked the first four innings, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts. Jacob Nunn finished up, allowing one hit and one run in two innings.
Kosciusko closed out the game with five runs in the sixth.
The Whippets were defeated by Neshoba Central 7-2 in a non-region game.
“Neshoba is a good team. They have some good arms,” McBride said. “We struggled offensively. We had some opportunities to break it open early and didn't. They had the same opportunities and they made the most of them.”
The Whippets took a 2-1 lead in the third. Cooper Black singled in the first run and scored on a passed ball. Neshoba Central tied it with a run in the fourth, went ahead 3-2 in the fifth, and broke the game open when Ryan Hardin ignited a four-run sixth with a leadoff triple.
The Whippets played Leake Central Tuesday in a region game, will be home against Pisgah Thursday and at Leake Central Friday,
