It was another rain-soaked week for the Kosciusko baseball team, but the Whippets did manage to get in a pair of contests in a tournament in Meridian.
Kosciusko made the most of its opportunities in a 12-3 win over Neshoba Central on Tuesday, then lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to defending Class 4A state champion West Lauderdale on Thursday.
The contests were a part of the 2018 Rush Invitational Spring Break Tournament held at Q.V. Sykes Park in Meridian.
The Whippets entered this week with a record of 5-4 overall. They are scheduled to host Nanih Waiya on Friday and go to Grenada on Saturday.
Next week, Kosciusko is slated to take on Noxubee County in a pair of district games: Tuesday (March 27) at home and Friday (March 30) in Macon.
In their win over Neshoba last Tuesday, the Whippets were actually out-hit 5-4. But they took advantage of six walks and six errors by the Class 5A Rockets.
Kosciusko scored five times in the second inning to go up 6-1. The Whippets added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.
Chase Morgan was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Jon Deason singled, scored twice and drove in a run to lead Kosy.
Micah Parker had one hit, one run and three RBIs and Brandon Black scored three times. Logan Fancher drove in two runs and also scored; Clark Dean scored twice; River Burrell and Justin Nunn each scored once.
Nolen Yuille was the winning pitcher, striking out four and giving up one earned run in three innings of work. Eldarius Roby fanned two in one scoreless inning while
Morgan struck out four in three hitless innings of relief.
Kosy fell to West despite a solid effort on the mound from Roby and Deason. Roby took the loss after giving up two earned runs and striking out four, while Deason threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Kosy led twice, 1-0 after scoring in the top of the second and 2-1 in the top of the third; the Whippets out-hit the Knights 7-4.
Dean was 2-for-2 with a double and a run and Ethan Gowan was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the way.
Fancher singled and drove in one; Parker singled and scored; Black had the team’s other hit.
