What we know is that Kosciusko will begin the 4A playoffs at home April 25, weather permitting, against a quality opponent from Region 2-4A. What we don't know is who the opponent will be.
As the runnerup in 4-4A, Kosciusko has the first game and third game, if needed, at home against the third place team from 2-4A in a best-of-three series. There are three strong teams in 2-4A, Pontotoc, South Pontotoc and Ripley.
The final order — 1, 2 and 3 — will be determined this week. Ripley and South Pontotoc have a game Thursday that should decide the order.
In games last week, Kosciusko defeated Pisgah 11-1 and lost to Germantown 8-2. A second game with Germantown was rained out and will not be rescheduled.
The Whippets will conclude the regular season at home Thursday with a non-region game against Pearl.
Kosciusko scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to end the Pisgah game under the 10-run mercy rule. Landon Wallace singled in one run and the second scored on an error.
Bailey Powers picked up the win, pitching shutout ball for four innings. He allowed one hit and fanned eight.
“He had a really good night with eight punch outs in four innings,” said coach Cole McBride.
Leadoff batter Jacob Nunn led the offense with a single, double, two walks, an RBI and four runs scored. Bennie Powell singled, doubled and drove in a run.
The Whippets took a 2-1 lead against Germantown on a two-run single by Payton Odom in the fourth. But Germantown tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then scored four in the fifth and two in the sixth. Cody Presley had two hits and three RBIs for the Mavericks and Jackson Hood blanked the Whippets over the final three innings on one hit, with five strikeouts.
McBride said his team is playing better and he's proud of them. “They're playing hard. They're getting after it. That's what I want to see. It's good to see those guys having success.”
