Circuit Court Judge George Mitchell is pleased to formally announce his candidacy to continue service as Circuit Court Judge for the 5th Circuit Judicial District Place 2. He was appointed by Governor Phil Bryant to fill the office January 1, 2016, upon the retirement of Judge Clarence Morgan, III.
“I have greatly enjoyed the privilege of being able to meet and serve the citizens of this district, which includes the counties of Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Grenada, Montgomery, Webster and Winston, Mitchell said.
Mitchell brings to the office a wealth of experience, having served as assistant district attorney for approximately four years, over 20 years as the county prosecutor of Webster County and serving as a city prosecutor up until accepting the appointment by Governor Bryant. Coupled with the experience in the criminal area both as a prosecutor and defense attorney, he also served as a prosecutor and defense attorney.
Mitchell is a veteran, serving in the United States Air Force and Mississippi Air National Guard, serving in Vietnam from 1968-69. After four years with the U. S. Air Force, he was honorably discharged and immediately joined the Mississippi Air National Guard, where he remained for the next 25 years, retiring with the rank of Brigadier General. He was then brought out of the inactive ready reserve and reassigned to the US Air Force Reserve as an emergency preparedness liaison officer, dealing with national disasters and threats dealing with weapons of mass destructions.
He was assigned to the adjutant general for the State of Mississippi and also served as a judge for two six-year terms of the Mississippi Court of Military Appeals.
“I wish for all of the voters to know and understand that I would personally like to meet each one of you individually but that is an impossible task,” Mitchell added. “I want to thank the voters of this district for the encouragement and cooperation that I have received so far in continuing to be your Circuit Judge.”
