The Winona Christian baseball team finished out the regular season against rival Carroll Academy last week with an entertaining three-game series.
The Stars took game 1 of the series 12-2 on Tuesday and then fell 20-17 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. Carroll used that momentum to take a 6-3 win in the nightcap on Friday to take the series.
The Stars, now 8-10 on the season, get a tough draw in the first round as they will take on Marshall in first-round action. Winona will play at Marshall on Tuesday and host the Patriots for a possible doubleheader on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
Winona Christian 12, Carroll 2
The Stars built an early lead and finished strong as they took a 10-run win over the Rebels to open the series on Tuesday.
Winona scored one in the first and fourth and two in the third and fifth and led 6-0. Carroll scored two in the top of the sixth while Winona finished with six in the bottom of the sixth to take the run-rule win.
Winona outhit Carroll 10-6 in the contest. Collin Parkinson was 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs while Bryce Harville was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Trace Carpenter was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jake Ware scored two runs while Hunter Land had two RBIs. Will Irwin and Jase Osborn each walked twice and scored a run.
Brannon Hill started on the mound for Winona Christian and gave up two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven to pick up the win.
Carroll 20, Winona Christian 17
The Rebels pulled away late to take a come-from-behind win over the Stars in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.
Each team scored two in the first inning while Carroll scored two more in the top of the second to go up 4-2. Winona then scored five runs in the second before Winona answered with five runs in the second to go up 7-4. Carroll added two more runs in the third and trailed 8-6 after three innings. The Rebels then put four runs on the board in the fourth to take a 10-6 leave before the Stars plated seven runs in the fourth to take a 15-10 lead. But Winona answered with five runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 19-15 lead. Winona added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings while Carroll pushed one across in the seventh.
Carroll outhit Winona 19-11 in the contest while each team had six errors. For Winona, Jake Ware was 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored and five RBIs. Collin Parkinson was 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs while Brannon Hill was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Bryce Harville doubled and drove in three runs while Trace Carpenter doubled, walked three times and scored three times. Will Irwin and Zach Bledsoe each walked twice and scored twice while Hunter Land singled, walked twice and scored twice.
Carpenter started and pitched 3 1/3 innings while Land, Bledsoe and Ware all pitched in relief.
Carroll 6, Winona Christian 3
After a slugfest in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, the Rebels took a three-run win in the rubber match to take the series from the Stars.
Winona scored one in the first while Carroll scored one in the second and third and led 2-1. Carroll score one in the fifth and sixth to retake the lead at 3-2 before Carroll scored four in the sixth to take the win.
For Winona, the Stars had just four hits. Sam Thompson tripled and drove in a run while Collin Parkinson singled, scored and had an RBI. Brannon Hill and Bryce Harville had the other hits.
Parkinson started and pitched two innings and gave up one run-on three hits while Tyler Schraenkler pitched the next three innings and gave up five runs on five hits. Will Irwin pitched the last inning and walked two.
