I know, I know, this column usually talks about something utterly different than sports but then does a 180 and puts my one reader on a field somewhere to give it a sports theme of some sort, but today is somewhat different. I would like to get up on my soapbox and commend a couple of Kosciusko’s finest on a job well
done recently that made my oldest son a very relieved and thankful individual.
It all started on a Wednesday night after church. My son had taken a short drive there from Holmes Community College, where he is a trainer for the football team… (see that? a quick sports reference for your enjoyment), to attend the service. At the end of the service, he asked me where we were going to eat and I stated that I would take care of supper on this night and would open up the pocket book, ‘cause you just can’t hide money. Well, anyway, I met my boy and his girlfriend at the Mickey D’s where we proceeded to order, receive and consume our after church supper. Upon completion of the meal we were all proceeding to head our separate ways––my wife and my other two sons to the house and my oldest son back to HCC, when, in a state of panic my oldest said, “I can’t find my wallet!!!” He said that he only had a few dollars in it, but his military ID, his Holmes ID, his military credit card, his own debit card and a very special token that he received upon graduation from Basic, among other things, were in his wallet.
We began to frantically search the establishment for the wallet and came up empty. My son had arrived earlier than I did and was sitting at another table when we arrived and figured he must have left it there and somebody snatched it up. Management let us review the tape of the back dining area and sure enough, the video revealed my boy standing up from the table upon our arrival and leaving his wallet behind at the table. Several minutes passed with the wallet sitting on the table all by it lonesome when a fellow waltzed right over and scooped it up, leaving the establishment immediately after retrieving his prize for the night. The suspect was identified and my son drove to the Kosciusko Police Department to file a report on his stolen/missing wallet. Just minutes after he arrived, police officers Josh Pinkard and former Kosciusko Whippet baseball/football player Kenny Barron…another intentional sports reference, were on the case and had the wallet recovered in no time. They both knew the individual and where he lived and went directly to his residence. The suspect in question admitted to taking the wallet because he was, in his own words, “drunk and hungry,” and proceeded to remove the three dollars cash from it and toss it into his garbage can. The officers recovered the money and the wallet and asked my son if he would like to press charges. My boy decided against pressing charges and was just thrilled to get his possessions back.
This is the type incident that goes unseen by most citizens on a daily basis. Because no charges were filed, the incident was not publicized. I wanted to rectify that situation and thank these two young and hardworking officers, Josh Pinkard and Kenny Barron, one more time. And I would also like to commend all of my brothers behind the badge for the job you all do in our city and our county. Carry on brothers and WATCH YOUR SIX!!!
