The Kosciusko Whippet baseball team continues to roll after winning three contests last week, with two wins coming over the Louisville Wildcats by scores of 7-5 and 12-3 respectively on Tuesday and Friday night and a nice 9-5 win over the defending 2016 MHSAA Class 4A South State Champion Newton County Cougars on Saturday. With the three wins the Whippets move to 19-4 overall and 8-0 in region play.
In Tuesday night’s road win over the Wildcats Bryce Oakes got the win by pitching 5.1 innings, allowing no runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven. Jerod Meggs got the start for the Whippets and lasted 1.2 innings, yielding five runs (four earned) on one hit and three walks while striking out two. The Whippets hosted game two of the Region 4-4A series against the Wildcats on Friday night and Jeremy Deason got the start and win for Kosy. Deason pitched four innings, yielding two runs on eight hits and a walk. Ethan Gowan pitched one inning for the Whippets and shut the Wildcats down by striking out all three batters he faced. The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Deason with a single; Dean with a single, one run scored and an RBI; Fancher with a single and one run scored; Meggs with a single and one run scored; Brandon Black with one run scored; Parker with a double and three RBI; Herron with a single, triple, two runs scored and three RBI; Gowan with one run scored; Rusty Atkinson with two runs scored and Yuille with a double, two runs scored and three RBI.
Kosy finished off the week with a 9-5 win over Newton County on Saturday where Rusty Atkinson picked up the win after pitching 3.2 innings. Atkinson yielded four runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out three Cougars. Yuille pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one and Parker got the save in one inning of work, yielding no runs, hits or walks. The offensive leaders for Kosciusko were Deason with a single, double, two runs scored and an RBI; Dean with a double and an RBI; Fancher with a single, one run scored and an RBI; Daulton Lindsey with one run scored; Morgan with a single, one run scored and an RBI; Parker with a single and one run scored; Herron with a triple and three runs scored and Yuille with two RBI.
The Region 4-4A Championship will be decided this week when the Whippets take on the defending 2016 MHSAA Class 4A State Champion Houston Hilltoppers on Tuesday and Thursday night. Game one was played on Tuesday in Kosciusko and game two of the series will be on the road in Houston on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Hilltoppers were 8-0 in Region 4 play as well going into Tuesday night’s contest. The Whippets will finish up the regular season on Saturday when they host the Winona Tigers at 2 p.m. The Class 4A North Playoffs begin on April 21.
