Kosciusko celebrated an incomplete softball season that could have been special with an awards ceremony on the school's softball field recently.
“We were finally able to get together. We followed all the (pandemic) rules” said coach Tony Terry. “We played a little scrimmage game. They wanted to be on the field one last time. One last time to wear the uniform.”
The Lady Whippets were 7-2 when the season came to an end, the only two losses coming against unbeaten 5A power Neshoba Central. In the seven wins, Kosciusko outscored the opposition 97-4, thanks to an offense that produced a .417 team batting average.
Junior first baseman K.C. Schuler was named MVP. She batted .680 with four doubles, two triples, 17 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
“She was on a pace to have as good an offensive season as we have ever had,” Terry said.
Schuler had plenty of help. Freshman outfielder Campbell Blaine batted .625, junior second baseman Kelly Hood .565, sophomore outfielder Lizzie Kate Jones .524, senior outfielder Laken Milner .407 and seventh grader Mary Kimble Price .400. Price was also the team's most effective pitcher with a 2-0 record and a 2.47 ERA.
Other award winners were: Blaine – Offensive MVP; senior shortstop Josie Meggs – Defensive MVP;
Jones – Most Improved; Hood – Dirt Dog; Milner – Coaches Award; Price – Newcomer of the Year.
Meggs and Milner were the team captains; Terry said Dirt Dog is “a real go getter. Every year, we give it to someone who goes 100 percent all the time.”
The Coaches Award is for a player who stood out over the course of the season, “or in her case for six years. She's a really good kid,” Terry said of Milner.
