The Kosciusko Whippet baseball team started out the spring break holidays with two wins last Tuesday over Amite School and Neshoba Central at QV Sykes Park in Meridian on Tuesday by scores of 12-2 and 6-5 respectively before dropping two on the road to Pearl and Newton County on Thursday and Friday. The Whippets rebounded nicely on Saturday with a 14-3 thumping of Lamar to move their overall record to 11-3.
In the first game on Tuesday against Amite Jerod Meggs got the start and win, yielding one run on two hits and five walks while striking out four in four innings. Bryce Oakes pitched the final inning of the five inning affair, yielding one run (unearned) on no hits while walking one. The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Jeremy Deason with two singles and one run scored; Clark Dean with a run scored and an RBI; Logan Fancher with a single, double and three RBI; Brandon Black with one run scored; Daulton Lindsey with one run scored; Chase Morgan with a single, two runs scored and an RBI; Meggs with one run scored and two RBI; Loftin Price with one run scored; Jatavious Herron with a double, one run scored and two RBI; Rusty Atkinson with one run scored and Walker Yuille with a single, double, two runs scored and an RBI.
On Tuesday night Deason got the start and win over Neshoba Central, surrendering five runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings of work. Rusty Atkinson pitched the final inning to earn the save, yielding no hits or runs while striking out three. The offensive leaders for the Whippets were Deason with a single and an RBI; Dean with a single and one run scored; Fancher with a single and one run scored; Lindsey with two runs scored; Morgan with a single and an RBI; Meggs with an RBI; Micah Parker with a double and one run scored; Herron with one run scored; Rusty Atkinson with an RBI and Yuille with a double and an RBI.
The Whippets hit the road on Thursday and traveled to Pearl where Yuille got the start by pitching four innings, yielding four runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Ethan Gowan pitched two innings and took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out one. Rusty Atkinson pitched the final inning yielding no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out one.
The offensive leaders for Kosy were Deason with a single; Dean with an RBI; Black with a run scored; Morgan with a single and two runs scored; Meggs with a single; Parker with a single and a double; Herron with a double, one run scored and an RBI; Gowan with a single and an RBI and Yuille with a single.
On Friday in Newton County, Parker got the start and loss for the Whippets by pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out one batter. Herron pitched the final 1.1 innings and yielded two runs on four hits while striking out one. The offensive leaders for Kosciusko were Deason with a single; Dean with one run scored; Black with one run scored; Parker with an RBI; Price with a run scored and one RBI and Herron with two singles, one run scored and an RBI.
In Saturday’s contest against Lamar, Oakes got the start and win by pitching four innings, yielding only two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three. Gowan pitched two innings in the contest, allowing one unearned run on one hit and four walks while striking out three. Rusty Atkinson pitched an inning and gave up no runs on one hit.

The Whippets played at Caledonia on Tuesday and will host Caledonia on Friday at 7 p.m. in another Region 4-4A contest before hitting the road on Saturday to take on Yazoo County at 1 p.m.
