The Kosciusko Whippets (1-8, 0-4) were eliminated from any postseason, playoff scenarios last Friday night when they fell to the Leake Central Gators 21-17 in Carthage. The Whippets had the lead from 3:47 in the first quarter until 10:33 left in the fourth when the Gators tied the contest at 14-14.
Kenny Ashmore gave the Whippets a 17-14 lead with 5:24 remaining in the game with a 25-yard field goal, but the Gators responded with a 78-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kick to push the final margin to 21-17.
The Whippets took an early 7-0 lead when quarterback Clark Dean found tight end Ashton Greer with a six-yard strike after a none-play, 66-yard drive. The Whippets would take the 7-0 lead into the second quarter.
With 7:40 remaining in the half, Stefan Harmon broke loose and rambled 27 yards for the Whippets’ second touchdown of the night, giving the Whippets a 14-0 lead over the Gators after a seven-play, 74-yard drive. The Gators responded right before the half with a touchdown of their own on a one-yard run, conversion failed, to push the score to 14-6 going into the half.
Neither team would score in the third quarter, but the Gators scored quickly in the fourth on a one-yard run with 10:33 remaining in the contest. The two-point pass was successful, tying the contest at at 14-14.
The Whippets took the lead, 17-14, five minutes later on Ashmore’s field goal and relinquished the lead on the ensuing kickoff and 78-yard touchdown return and fell to the Gators 21-17.
The Whippets gave up 223 yards of offense to the Gators with 91 coming through the air and 132 and two touchdowns coming on the ground.
Leake Central (4-6, 1-3) will play Caledonia (4-5, 1-3) for the Region 4-4A No. 4 seed on Friday night in Carthage while the Whippets travel to Louisville (5-5,3-1) for their season finale.
