Thunder, a Kosciusko age 10 and under baseball team, won a USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) championship last week. The team advanced to the World Series played in Orange Beach, Alabama, after winning the state championship in Brandon.
Twenty-four teams from seven states participated the World Series. After pool play, the teams were placed in three brackets, with the top eight teams in Bracket A, the next eight in Bracket B and the final eight in bracket C.
With a 2-2 record in pool play, the Thunder was placed in Bracket B, where the team won four straight games for the
championship, culminating with a 12-0 victory over the Saints from Praireville, La. The Thunder outscored the four opponents 43-5.
Head coach Howard Schuler said everyone on his team played well. “I don't like to single anybody out. I preach a team effort.”
The Thunder is a AAA travel team, the second highest classification after Major League. The two losses at the World Series came against Major League teams.
Schuler was assisted by two other coaches, Robby Horne and Roy Cummins. All three coaches have sons on the team.
