Just a week after winning a state championship and being announced as a Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star, Kosciusko junior pitcher Katie Mitchell was chosen as the Region 4-4A Most Valuable Player.
Mitchell and five other Lady Whippets were named to the All-Region 4-4A squad last week. While she was chosen as the league’s MVP, Maddy Gilmore and Josie Meggs were named Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Players by the region’s coaches.
In addition to those three, Kelly Hood, Madeline McCown and Emma Rush were all named to the All-Region team.
Here is a rundown of the Whippets and Lady Whippets who also received All-Region honors in their respective sports last week:
— In cross-country, Daniel Garland was recognized for being named to the All-State team, and Garland, Jose Orduna-Arvizu, Bryce Broyles, Gustavo Orduna, Mary Patton Henderson, Jalaycia Brown, Mackenzie Alford, Reid Hutchinson, Crystal Garcia and Anna Catherine Cheek picked up all-district honors.
— In tennis, all-district honors went to Kody Causey, John Presley Tate, Lakelyn Fancher, Madison Autry, Darlecia Carter, Kestyn Williams, Javonta Ragsdale, Karla Nash, Benjamin Brunt and Thomas Brunt.
— In girls’ soccer, Mackenzie Alford, Jalaycia Brown, Mary Patton Henderson and Vanessa Martinez were each named all-district.
— In boys’ soccer, Jose Orduna, Jake Cockroft, Erubiel Garcia, Josh Hamilton and Brandon Russell were named to the All-Region 4-4A team.
— In slow-pitch softball, All-Division 4-4A honors went to Sarah Caroline Henderson, Kelly Sheets, Kelly Hood and Gabbie Kelley.
— In boys’ basketball, Calvin Banks and Terry Skinner were each recognized as all-district players.
— In football, Jaquan Williams, Kahare Haynes, Zavier Miller, Clint Williams and Kadarius Banks were each named as first-team, All-Region 4-4A performers. Second-team honors went to Jake Cockroft, Devin Foster, Deitric Hull, Nicholas Mallett, Chris Riley, Paul Wood, Chris Robinson, John Presley Tate and Taquan Winters. Honorable-mention honors went to Kendrell Gamble, Max Cook, Kenwon Riley, Devonte
Ellis, Clark Dean, Kody Causey, McCarvin Carter and Garrett Dickerson.
Individually, Antonio Harmon was named the 4-4A Newcomer of the Year.
— In baseball, All-Region 4-4A honors went to Chase Morgan, Walker Yuille, Ethan Gowan and Micah Parker.
— In girls’ basketball, Kenyetta Allen and Samia Veasy each picked up All-Region 4-4A honors.
