Fresh off a Class 4A state championship, the Kosciusko fast-pitch softball team and 14 other squads handed out awards at Kosy’s 2017-18 athletic banquet last week.
The 31-4 Lady Whippets gave the Most Valuable Player award to Katie Mitchell, while Maddy Gilmore was named Most Valuable Offensive Player and Josie Meggs Most Valuable Defensive Player.
Abigail Myers captured the Lady Whippet Award, Kelly Hood took home the Dirt Dawg Award, Myers won the team’s Academic Award and Makenzie Ryals captured the Coaches Award.
Kosy’s baseball team, which reached the Class 4A North State championship series with a remarkable postseason run, gave the Most Valuable Player honors to Walker Yuille, who also won the team’s Most Outstanding Pitcher Award. Ethan Gowan was the Most Improved Player and the Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Justin Nunn was the Most Outstanding Defensive Player and River Burrell won the Whippet Award.
Here is a rundown of Kosciusko’s other winners who were recognized last week:
— In tennis, Kody Causey and Karla Nash each took home the Golden Racket Award, while Darlecia Carter won the Most Improved award. Lakelyn Fancher won the Golden Whippet Award and John Presley Tate captured the Heart of a Champion award.
— In girls’ track, Ta’lynda Boyd won the Golden Shoe Award and Diamond Rayford won the Best All-Around award. Macy Arnold, Markayla McBride, Mackenzie Alford and Brishana Simmons won the Best Relay Team award for their participation on the 4x800 meter team.
— In boys’ track, Calvin Banks won the Eye of the Tiger Award, E’shavious Mays won the Best Runner award and Devonte Ellis won the Flash Award. Calvin Banks, Kadarius Banks, Devonte Ellis and Jaquan Williams won the Best Relay Team award.
— In cross-country, Reid Hutchinson and Daniel Garland won the Most Valuable Runner awards while the Whippet awards went to Cristal and Erubiel Garcia. Anna Catherine Cheek and Ethan Lindsey won Most Improved awards; Emmalee Myers and Marcus Grandelag won Most Dedicated awards; Jorge Orduna and Mary Patton Henderson won the Newcomer Award.
— In football, the Most Valuable Offensive Player went to Jaquan Williams while the Most Valuable Defensive Player went to Kahare Haynes. Chris Riley was the Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and Nick Mallet was the Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman. The Most Outstanding Offensive Skills Player award went to Zavier Miller while the Most Outstanding Defensive Skills Player award went to Clint Williams. Devin Foster won the Hard Hat award; Jake Cockroft won the Most Valuable Special Teams Player award; Chris Robinson and Kadarius Banks won Golden Whippet awards; and Antonio Harmon won the Top Newcomer award.
— In slow-pitch softball, Kelly Hood captured Most Valuable Player honors while Makenzie Ryals was the Most Valuable Defensive Player and Kelly Sheets the Most Valuable Offensive Player. Sarah Caroline Henderson won the Lady Whippet Award, Gabbie Kelley won the Coaches Award, Melissa Gowan won the Dirt Dawg Award, Henderson was honored for having the highest batting average and Marian Jones won the Heart of a Champion award.
— In girls’ soccer, JaLaycia Brown was the Most Valuable Player and Mary Patton Henderson the Best Offensive Player, while Mackenzie Alford and Vanessa Martinez were Co-Best Defensive Player recipients. Camryn Greer won the Most Improved award, Anna Gowan won the Rookie of the Year award and Ali Grace Wright won the Whippet Award.
— In boys’ soccer, Brandon Russell was the Most Valuable Player, Erubiel Garcia was the Best Defensive Player and Jake Cockroft was the Best Offensive Player. Marcus Grandelag and Alfredo Marin were Co-Rookie of the Year award recipients, Davion Harmon was Most Improved and Josh Hamilton took home the Whippet Award.
— In girls’ basketball, Offensive Player of the Year honors went to Kenyetta Allen and Kiarra Woodard was the Whippet Award winner. Katie Mitchell and America Riley shared Best 3-Point Shooter honors, Samia Veasy was the Most Versatile Player, Mahogany Perteet won the Assist Leader award and Diamond Rayford won the Sixth Woman Award.
— In boys’ basketball, Terry Skinner was the Offensive Player of the Year and Jaquan Williams won the Whippet Award. Calvin Banks was Most Versatile, O’corya Forrest was Best 3-Point Shooter, Devonte Grove was Defensive Player of the Year, E’shavious Mays was Most Improved and Antonio Harmon won the Sixth Man Award.
— In golf, Jett Crosby took home Medalist honors for the team while Carter Jones won the Most Improved award.
— In powerlifting, Kentrell Teague won the Best Lightweight Lifter award, Michael Rimmer won the Best Heavyweight Lifter award and Paul Wood won the Whippet Award.
— In cheerleading, Paris Nichols captured All-Around Best Cheerleader honors, while the Loud and Proud Spirit Award went to Anna Grace Rigby. Terrica Talley won the Most Improved Cheerleader award, Abigail Myers won the Whippet Award and Kansas Logan won the Spotter Award.
