The Kosciusko Lady Whippets are off to a perfect start with a 6-0 record after defeating Nanih Waiya, Cleveland Central (twice) and Morton this past week. The defending MHSAA Class 4A North State Champions hosted Winona this past Tuesday and will host Morton at
5 p.m. on Friday before playing two more at home on Saturday against Choctaw County and Caledonia at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
In last Tuesday night’s 16-0 trouncing of Nanih Waiya, Katie Mitchell got the start and win, giving up no runs on no hits while striking out six Lady Warriors. Sarah Caroline Henderson pitched one inning in relief and surrendered no hits or runs while striking out two. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Kelly Hood with two singles and two runs scored; Josie Meggs with a double and two runs scored; Maddy Gilmore with two singles and two runs scored; AnnaLeigh Jones with a triple, single and two runs scored; Madeline McCown with a single and three runs scored; Abigail Myers with a triple, single and two runs scored; Mackenzie Ryals with a double and two runs scored; Emma Rush with a single and Campbell Blaine with one run scored.
The Lady Whippets played Cleveland Central in a doubleheader on Saturday and won both contests by scores of 17-0 and 12-0. In the 17-0 win, Mitchell got the start and win by pitching two shutout innings, striking out three. Henderson came on in relief and struck out one while allowing no runs. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Hood with two singles and three runs scored; Meggs with two singles, a double and three runs scored; Gilmore with a single and a double with three runs scored; Jones with a single and a double with one run scored; Katie Mitchell with a single and a double; Brooke Mitchell with one run scored and Gabbie Kelley with two runs scored.
Maddy Gilmore got the start and win in game two of the doubleheader, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three in three innings of work. Emmagail Kelley pitched one inning in relief and struck out one while allowing no runs. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Hood with a triple and two runs scored; Gilmore with a home run and one run scored; Jones with a single and one run scored; McCown with a single and one run scored; Katie Mitchell with a single and one run scored; Kathryn Schuler with a single; Henderson with two runs scored; Blaine with one run scored and Gabbie Kelley with one run scored.
In Monday night’s 5-3 win over Morton, Mitchell once again got the start and pitched seven complete, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out 11 Lady Panthers. The offensive leaders for the Lady Whippets were Gilmore with two singles and one run scored; Mitchell with a single; Jones with a single and one run scored; McCown with a single and one run scored; Myers with a double; Ryals with a single; Hood with one run scored and Meggs with one run scored.
