Whippets look to correct mistakes against Northeast Lauderdale
After dropping their opener to Neshoba Central last Friday night, the Kosciusko Whippets (0-1) are looking for redemption when they host Northeast Lauderdale Trojans (0-1) Friday night at 7 p.m. who themselves are coming off an opening night loss to Jackson Academy 35-28. The Whippets defeated the Trojans 18-0 in their last meeting in 2015, but expect a very different squad this year.
“We are very familiar with Northeast Lauderdale because we played them this past spring and fall,” said Kosciusko head coach Chad Peterson. “They are a very well-coached team and they have some speed and some really big kids up front on both offense and defense. No. 3 (Jarvis Cook) is a very skilled athlete and they do a lot of things with him; move him around and use him on special teams. We will have to keep an eye on him and try to pen him up the best we can.”
Cook had seven receptions against Jackson Academy last Friday night for 57 yards and no touchdowns while sophomore running back Kamerion Hulin (No. 2) rushed for 62 yards on nine carries. Northeast had 265 yards of total offense with 93 yards on the ground and accumulated 172 yards through the air on 12 receptions with Frank Radcliff (No. 6) leading all receivers with 79 yards on four catches and Cook with six catches for 57 yards. In comparison, the Whippets amassed 232 total yards with 99 through the air and 133 on the ground.
“Their offensive line is bigger and seem to get bigger and better every year that I’ve seen them,” added Peterson. “It Jackson Academy to the very end to win the game and Northeast should have beat them. We will have our hands full with them and we will have to protect the football and keep their offense off the field and win the line of scrimmage.”
