Kelly Causey, 48, was named head football coach for the Kosciusko Whippets last Thursday night. Causey, who came from Cleveland High School where he had been the head coach since 2011, compiled a 52-27 mark that included a 13-2 season in 2014 and a 10-4 mark in 2011.
Causey, who felt the timing was right for him and his family to make a move after East Side High and Cleveland High consolidated, applied for the head position at Kosy and looks forward to getting started.
“I have always looked at the position when it was open and have always felt that Kosciusko was one of the better jobs in 4A football,” said Causey. “Cleveland was home, but the timing was right and I am extremely happy to be here.”
Causey plans on running a triple-option, run-oriented offense similar to what Georgia Tech of the ACC does. “We will play aggressive, hit you in the mouth, ball security offense that will help our defense stay off the field. We will throw it when we need too depending on the athletes we have.” Defensively, Causey favors a four-man front but will run a three-man front based on available personnel.
“I am excited to be here and look forward to working for a community that supports its high school the way this town does,” added Causey. “I have a lot of plans on things I want to get done and I look forward to getting started.”
Causey should begin his tenure as Whippet head coach on February 27 and is ready to put his mark on the program.
“I have a lot of plans on things I want to get done,” said Causey. “My philosophy is to always do what is best for the team and I will treat all athletes the same whether they are first team or not. Everybody needs to have the same goals for the program to be successful and I feel with the athletes we have here, that we can be very successful.”
Though he is a “Delta kid,” Causey’s family is from the Grenada area and he is looking forward to moving to Kosciusko. Causey is married to the former Karen Rossetti of Shaw and they have three children.
