Two teams that started their season with victories will clash tonight in Goodman when Holmes CC squares off with Southwest Mississippi.
The Bulldogs topped East Central 48-40 in an offensive shootout last week, while the Bears knocked off Coahoma 24-6.
MACJC Offensive Player of the Week Dejerric Bryant led the Bulldog offense to 578 offensive yards, the second most in the nation during week 1. Bryant threw for 296 yards and ran for 76 yards with four combined touchdowns, while Antavius Moody provided the spark with the receiving corps. with 148 receiving yards and 76 rushing yards. D.J. Montgomery was the deep ball threat with 3 catches for 97 yards and a score. Linebackers Jamar Smith and Buddy Benson combined for 21 tackles.
The Bears are led by a plethora of freshman, including quarterback Neil McLaurin, who threw for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while running for 80 yards and a score. Fellow freshman Nakia Trotter is the leader out of the backfield after running for 79 yards last week. Tight-end Ravian Pierce was McLaurin’s main target last week after catching seven balls for 76 yards.
The Bulldogs and Bears last played in 2011, with Holmes snagging a three-point victory.
