Engine breaking will no longer be allowed in the city of Kosciusko.
The Kosciusko Board of Aldermen unanimously approved an ordinance outlawing non-muffled engine breaking during its meeting Tuesday night.
According to the ordinance, anyone utilizing an engine break or an exhaust break without an exhaust muffler sufficient to prevent the creation of excessively loud noises, except when the use of such brake is necessary for the safe operation of the vehicle. The ordinance is not intended to prohibit the passage of vehicles equipped with engine or exhaust brakes, but rather limit the use of such equipment under the aforesaid circumstances.
The law will go into effect Sept. 6 with the penalty registering as a misdemeanor offense with a $100 fine.
In other business the aldermen entered into an agreement with the Leake County Board of Supervisors to house city inmates at the Leake County Correctional Facility in Carthage.
The agreement comes after the Attala County Board of Supervisors decided to close the Attala County Jail, which was built in 1957, Tuesday morning. Kosciusko will pay $19 per inmate per day with five beds guaranteed for Kosciusko.
Other actions taken by the aldermen include:
• adopting the 2016-17 budget;
• approving the budget for Kosciusko Water and Light;
• approving an airport grant for land acquisition;
• hiring Chase Powell as an officer with the Kosciusko Police Department;
• approving a paving quote of $14,404 with Asphalt Doctor;
• adopting a new travel policy for city employees.
The next scheduled meeting of the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen will be September 20.
