Fresh off a 1-1 start to the season, the Ethel High School fast-pitch softball team is preparing to host a six-game event on Saturday.
The action begins with Ethel playing host to Class 4A Kosciusko at 10 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest between Kosy and French Camp Academy. The 1 p.m. contest features FCA and Eupora, with Eupora tangling with Noxapater at 2:30 p.m. The 4 p.m. game features Noxapater and Leake Central, with the host Lady Tigers of Ethel looking to close things out against Leake Central at 5:30 p.m.
After having the early part of its schedule washed out by rain, Ethel finally got the season started on Saturday afternoon by hosting seven-time defending state champion Neshoba Central. The Lady Tigers dropped an 11-0 decision to the Class 5A squad, but EHS head coach Tyler McKinley said there was plenty for his team to gain out of playing the game.
“I want the girls to see the best and see what kind of work you have to put in to compete with them,” McKinley. “Our girls battled and the game was really close for the early part of the game. It was 4-0 in the top of the fifth. We played decent defense, but they just got to hitting the ball.”
On Monday night the Lady Tigers took an 8-2 road win over Sebastopol.
He said the game against Kosy on Saturday will be a big one for both teams.
“Being eight miles down the road, everybody knows everybody,” he said. “We both want the same things with our programs. It’s a good game for everybody.”
