There are plenty of moving parts on the Central Holmes Christian School campus this summer.
Head football coach Jim Crowder recently finished renovating the field house while new baseball coach Ty Dean has been working hard on the school’s baseball field.
“We are redoing everything in the field house from top to bottom,” Crowder said. “New walls, new floors, new ceilings. We are going to get everything painted and present a product that is attractive to kids. We work these kids hard and they spend more time up here that they do at home in a lot of cases. We are just trying to make them as comfortable as possible.”
Crowder said the field house renovation was something he eyed early on in his tenure and is part of several improvements going on at the campus.
“The school has been incredibly supportive as far as trying to help us get it done,” Crowder said. “Just trying to take a step forward in all of the programs. Kids are excited about it. We have been telling them that it was going to get done for a while. Kids are kind of “show me” these days. They can see the progress now. It puts them out while we are getting it done. They understand that they will get out of it what they put into it.”
Crowder said it helps to have an administration that understands the struggle.
“There were some things that coach (Tony) Banks being a former coach understands as a headmaster,” Crowder said. “He knows what it’s like building a program and trying to sustain a program. He has been nothing but helpful in trying to help us do that. Well before I got here coach Banks has done a ton of work on this campus. Built the baseball field from nothing. Coach Dean has done a ton of work on the baseball field this summer and just trying to make that look better.”
After the field house, the Trojans will also take the field with new uniforms this season and will have several new faces on the sidelines. New boys basketball coach Ross Taylor will also assist in football along with Dean, who will coach the quarterbacks. Also joining the staff is Mitch Womack, who will coach the offense line and be the defensive coordinator.
“Both of those new coaches will help with football,” Crowder said. “We also have Mitch Womack coming over from Washington who will coach the offensive line. We are going to be really big up front and have four starters back there. It would be a shame for those guys not to have some good coaching. The coaching staff has been a big help this summer. Everybody is on the same page and it has been an enjoyable summer.”
