While Kenneth Nelson is technically the first-year head football coach at McAdams High School, he is really not. This is the coaching veteran’s second time around at the Attala School, so he knew what to expect during early season workouts.
With it being a rural school and many of the athletes not having rides available, the first day of football practice can be slim at times, but Nelson was pleased with what he saw from his Bulldogs on Monday.
“They actually came to practice early and got out on the field and starting working out on their own,” Nelson said. “With me not coming in until one and not getting to see the kids before they left for summer, I really wasn’t sure what we would have. We had about 20 out and once school starts and we can catch up with some guys. It will probably get to about 30.”
Nelson said it was a typical first day, but he did spend some time installing his defense and offense, as they expect to get into pads on Thursday.
“For the most part I was pleased with our ‘All-Summer’ guys that have been here. The biggest thing you could see is that the summer work paid off for them,” he said.
The Bulldogs are set to travel to Jackson to take on Leake County. in a preseason jamboree at Mississippi Memorial Stadium, the home of Jackson State University, on Aug. 17.
McAdams opens the regular season on the road against J.Z. George on Aug. 23.
