The McAdams football team wrapped up spring football practices last week with a pair of two-quarter scrimmages at Mount Olive.
The Bulldogs, who went 5-6 last year and made the playoffs, split a pair of game, losing 12-6 go McLauren and then beating host Mount Olive 14-6.
“It went well,” McAdams football coach Jim Risen said. “We played the first game at 5 p.m. and it was really hot. McLauren beat us 12-6 but I thought we played well.
We played with a lot of excitement and the kids got after it on defense. I thought Christopher Brown played well at quarterback and we played well on defense.”
In the McLauren game Brown scored on a 36-yard run on a play-action pass where he called his own number and scampered for a touchdown.
Against Mount Olive, Brown scored on a 22-yard run on a reverse and then caught a 48-yard pass from Jordan Fleming for McAdams’ other score.
“Christopher had a big night,” Risen said. “He’s our go-to guy on offense and can really run. He finished second in the state in Class 1A in the 100-meter dash. He has great tenacity and a great feel for running the football.”
Risen said the offense did well, despite missing a starter on the line.
“We were missing our right guard,” Risen said. “We don’t have a lot of depth up front and that’s something we need to work on. We have to work on blocking better on offense. We have to work on the secondary and get the jitters out of the young guys and get them ready to play.”
Despite giving up the three scores, Risen said he liked what he saw on defense.
“We swarmed to the ball on defense and hit people when we got there,” Risen said. “We gave up two long touchdown passes but we knew our secondary was young and is going to have to get better. Other than that, our defensive line played really well. We are big up front and aggressive and have speed off the edge. I thought our defense will be one of the better ones in Class 1A next year.”
Risen said the Bulldogs will begin summer weight lifting after Memorial Day as well as working on 7-on-7 drills.
