The McAdams High School football team learned a lot of things in its Saturday afternoon jamboree in Jackson that Bulldogs head coach Kenneth Nelson already knew.
“We can’t make mistakes and we can’t get behind the chains,” Nelson said, referring to penalties that will cause his run-oriented Bulldogs to be in long yardage situations. “With the type of offense we run and the type of identity we have, we can’t afford for that to happen. We are a physical, smash mouth football team.”
While Nelson said his team competed, he said some big plays by Leake County, especially in the passing game, got his team behind early on the way to the 20-0 two-quarter loss in the scrimmage at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. “On the negative side of things, the game just got away from us. We know we have to shore up the secondary.”
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to North Carrollton where they will take on the Jaguars of J.Z. George, who are dropping from Class 3A to Class 2A this season. Nelson said it is very important for his team not to be deceived by the 0-11 mark the Jags posted last season.
“J.Z. George is a very athletic football team,” he said. “They do everything in such a quick tempo and they have some good backs. They like to give the ball to their halfback and fullback and run their offense through them.”
Nelson said there were not any major injuries for McAdams last week and that everyone should be healthy.
“With a team of 24 or 25 players you really don’t need any major injuries,” he said.
